Entrepreneurial Idea

Students studying Landscape Architecture are good at designing spaces for the outdoors, but lack experience and knowledge when it comes to designing a portfolio on the web.  As a requirement for many jobs in the field, students and professionals might need to submit a portfolio of their work when applying for a job.  Most of the time students will design a portfolio booklet that could require many hours and cost a lot of money to make.  Designing a portfolio website would potentially save everyone a lot of time and money on designing and reproduction of their portfolio.

When I started putting my portfolio online, there were no other resources that I could look at for ideas and inspiration.  I have only seen paper versions of Landscape Architecture Portfolios, but never a whole website devoted to them.  I eventually came up with my own design and layout and had to decide what content I was going to put on the site.

I am proposing to design a website which would help landscape architecture students and professionals with putting their portfolios online.  The site would teach them how to easily put all their projects online by using a step by step process that instructs them in the basics of web design.  This would be different than a basic web design tutorial site because it would be geared towards Landscape Architecture students and professionals.  The site would not only help in the web design process, but once the client’s site is done, employers and firms would be able to search and see all the content on these specific sites.  This could also help students and prospective employees for possible career opportunities.

  1. The best ideas come from a person's own experiences. I am pleased to read that you developed this idea from your own needs as a landscape architect. It sounds like you are on the right path with your idea. I would check out art portfolio sites to get some ideas about the best ways to display your work.

  2. I used to be in the Interior Design major and I found it frustrating that the portfolio websites did not offer exclusive layouts to what an ID portfolio should look like. Most of the portfolio websites were geared towards artists, not designers. If you develop this idea, there will be many designers, not just landscape architects, who will appreciate the content. Will you charge a monthly or yearly fee or nothing at all? How will you get the word out? Also, what will you name the website? Great idea, I'd be excited to see how architects and designers react to this.
